January 1945  -  Auschwitz Liberated

Upon learning of the imminent arrival of Soviet Forces, the SS ordered 60,000 inmates to march towards Germany and Austria.  Any prisoner who could not keep up was shot and killed. This death march claimed over 15,000 lives.

When the Soviet troops arrived at Auschwitz on January 27, 1945, they discovered the prisoners who had been left to die.  This group - approximately 7,000  -  included Otto Frank, the father of Anne Frank.
